Aboriginal RunWalk & Honour Your Health Challenge

Victoria, BC (August 25, 2016) – The Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council (Partners Council) is pleased to announce that registration is open for the 2016 Regional Leader Training Sessions, offered through the Aboriginal Healthy Living Activities , in partnership with SportMedBC.

The Regional Leader Training Sessions are offered to individuals working within, or representing an Aboriginal community, who are committed to delivering a healthy living project under the Aboriginal RunWalk or Honour Your Health Challenge programs.  The sessions are designed to bring together community leaders and individuals who are passionate about promoting health and wellness in the Aboriginal community in one or all of these four key areas: increased physical activity, healthy eating, reduction of tobacco misuse, and supporting healthy pregnancies.

Workshops will be offered in Nutrition, Physical Literacy, Sport Injury, Good Mental Health through Physical Activity, FitNation, Yoga, HealthBeat for Community, Nordic Walking, and more! Participants will learn from experts in their respective areas, and develop the skills necessary to deliver their own healthy living community project.

At the conclusion of training, participants will become eligible to apply for up to $1000 in grant support for their Aboriginal RunWalk or Honour Your Health Challenge community project.

  • Aboriginal RunWalk: lead your community in a 13-21 week program as they prepare for a 5K or 10K run/walk event
  • Honour Your Health Challenge: develop your own healthy living project, based on your community’s needs – past projects include creating a healthy eating cookbook, community recreation nights, plant identification walks, fitness challenges, and healthy lunch school programs

Eligibility:

Regional Leader Training is offered to employees of First Nations, Métis Chartered Communities, or Friendship Centres, Aboriginal Health or Education promoters, and individuals representing or working within Aboriginal organizations.

Accommodation/Travel:

Hotel accommodation will be provided and travel subsidies will be available to all participants eligible as defined by the travel policy (downloadable from our website)

Registration closes Sept. 16th and will be filled on a “first come, first served” basis.
