COVID-19 Pandemic Update

The First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) has provided the following update regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.

Vaccines

Vaccines are the best way to prevent severe illness from Covid-19. Please contact the Guardian Pharmacy if requiring a vaccine.

To register for a COVID-19 vaccine, call 1 (833) 838-2323 or visit gov.bc.ca/getvaccinated.

Testing

The rapid tests available through the Splatsin Health Centre require a certain level of virus in the body to detect COVID-19. You may not test positive until several days into the illness. It is recommended to re-test everyday until 5-7 days after the onset of symptoms.

There are more accurate tests available through Primary Care. It is recommended that you access a doctor if you are at risk of severe illness and are experiencing symptoms.

Treatments

There are treatments available for COVID-19 for those who are at risk of severe illness. Call Primary Care or your doctor if you are experiencing symptoms so that you may be tested and begin medication quickly, if required.

Tracking Current Numbers in BC

The province has changed how they are tracking numbers of COVID-19.

Reported community case counts are likely lower than the actual number of COVID-19 cases in BC. Most people now self administer rapid tests and not all who test positive are reporting to health authorities.

Hospitalization from COVID-19 numbers are likely higher than the actual number due to screening practices in the hospitals.

Death from COVID-19 numbers are likely higher than the actual number since they now include people who have died within 30 days of their first positive COVID-19 test.

Mannie, Splatsin’s Community Health Nurse, has put together a Splatsin-specific report on numbers. Please keep in mind the limitations of knowing the true numbers, as specified above.

• 4 positive in March

• 2 positive in April

• 2 positive in May
