Lakes Division ACE Program

Hello everyone,

Cohort #1 of the LD-ACE program graduated on September 18, 2016. From the 18 available seats, 15 men and women finished the program this past weekend. They spent all day Saturday and Sunday presenting their business concepts to a panel of experts from the lending world. They received very valuable feedback, advice and suggestions for next steps. Many have already began conversations regarding start-up loans that will propel them forward into their business ventures. A dinner was held in their honor on Sunday evening.  I have attached a write-up for your perusal.  If some of you would like to post it to your websites and/or newsletters, please do.

Funding for this training was provided by the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills training and the Ministry of AVED. The funding allows for three Cohorts of this UVIC award winning training. This program is a sister program to the Northwest ACE that has been running in Northern BC for several years now. Please take a moment to read about UVIC’s recent award (http://www.uvic.ca/gustavson/about/about/news/news/NWACE%20Gold%20Global%20Best.php)

The next LD-ACE will launch the very beginning of November 2016 and will run until the end of March 2017. PRECEDING each Cohort there will be an opportunity for anyone (all aboriginal person living  in the area) to sign up for a three day workshop where people can ‘explore’ the idea of traditional versus self-employment. This workshop is called the EAGLE workshop (Empowering Aboriginal generations of leaders and entrepreneurs).  There will be up to 4 separate offerings of this workshop.  All are identical and people will be able to choose the workshop dates that work the best for them.

Please see the attached information for the upcoming EAGLE Program. The three day workshop is offered on the following dates. They will be held at the Splatsin Community Centre located at 5767 Old Vernon Road, Enderby, with the exception of Oct 20 – 22 (tba). Interested people are to pick a workshop date and will need to fill out an application and send back to me or Fax to the Splatsin band office to my attention (please see attached poster for further  information)

The hope is that from the EAGLE workshops I will be able to find candidates for the much longer and in-depth, UVIC Entrepreneurship training program (ACE). The EAGLE workshops represent an opportunity for the broader band communities (all interested people from the region) to attend a three day workshop designed to help people gain clarity on their path to employment.

For example:

·  If you are someone who is interested in specific employment opportunities then this workshop will help direct you down a path of moving toward that dream job.

·  OR if perhaps you are keen to start a business or work within a Leadership capacity then this workshop will direct you on to the ACE program where you will receive the training and mentorship you need to get your ideas off the ground.

The first EAGLE workshop is scheduled for September 29, 30, 31,  2016. (Next weekend!! Please see attached poster for the other dates)  This workshop will be 8:30 to 4:30 each day and will also will be held at the Splatsin Community Centre located at 5775 Old Vernon Road, Enderby.

Given the short time lines we have been given, the goal will be to begin to collect applications very soon in order to be able to assess and process the requests and choose the best candidates for this training opportunity.

Any help you could offer would be very much appreciated.  Please feel free to spread the word.  You could help me in the following ways:

  • Print off the poster to post on your bulletin boards
  • Print off applications and information to make available to anyone who you happen to connect with
  • Submit the attached story on Cohort #1 to your newsletter and websites (facebook as well) for publication.
