Invasive Species Field Tour and Workshop

A group of eight, including five Splatsin and Yucwmenlúcwu (Caretakers of the Land) staff, participated in a field tour and workshop in June to view and consider invasive plant species concerns on Salmon River and Spallumcheen (IR #1 & IR #2) lands. Support received from the Invasive Species Council of BC (ISCBC) and Invasive Plant Management Extension Specialist, Dave Ralph, recently facilitated the co-development of a draft Splatsin Invasive Plant Management Plan (IPMP). The draft plan presents best management practices and approaches for Splatsin to act on managing invasive plants on Band lands.

As a part of developing our capacity to implement the Splatsin IPMP, ISCBC has offered a free online training course for community members to become a Certified Pesticide Applicator. The training will occur in early August in a group setting. There is space available for up to three additional people to complete the training and be part of a work crew that will be out on the land and managing invasive plants in August. If you or someone you know is interested to be involved, please contact: [email protected] or (778) 943-1821 to sign up and receive more information.
