Fortune Field Specific Claim – Final Information Session

Ratification Vote on Fortune Field Land Settlement Agreement

An official community vote will be held on July 16, 2016 to ratify the Fortune Field Land Settlement Agreement among the Splatsin people of Secwepemc Nation and the Governments of British Columbia and Canada.

What is the Fortune Field Land Settlement Agreement?

The Fortune Field Land Settlement Agreement or our Specific Claim on Fortune Field dates back to the 1970s-1980s when we conducted historical research on land claims. It was during this time of research and interviews with Splatsin elders, that Fortune Field, a ¾ of an acre graveyard on the land that A. L. Fortune purchased from the province, was identified as part of our reserve promised to us by Canada.

After years of negotiations, there is today a $300,000 settlement offer from the government of Canada. As a community we will vote to ratify it on it July 16, 2016.

What is a ‘ratification vote?’

Ratification is the official way to confirm something. In this case, it’s by vote.

Upcoming information sessions hosted by our Title & Rights department and legal counsel will help you cast your vote on the Fortune Field land settlement agreement on July 16, 2016.

If approved, how will the monies from the Fortune Field Land Settlement Agreement be allocated?

The settlement is offered to reconcile a piece of our history. So, the monies would be allocated to both healing past grievances and creating future prosperity for our community.
