Aboriginal Youth Entrepreneurship Program


Program Information

Description: The Aboriginal Youth Entrepreneurship Program is an initiative of Métis Youth British Columbia (MYBC), in partnership with Canadian Centre for Aboriginal Entrepreneurship, which aims to Aboriginal youth age 18 to 35 who are interested in learning more about entrepreneurship. Youth will participate in training to increase their business and entrepreneurship skills and support their personal career aspirations. While attending the program, you will learn core skills on how to start your own small to medium size business.

Who is eligible to attend?

Aboriginal Youth within the Program regions, between the ages of 18 and 35, that have a business idea or are interested in becoming an entrepreneur.

Travel and Accommodation

Travel and accommodation will be provided by Métis Nation British Columbia. Please ensure that your contact information on the forms is complete, and that your travel and preferences are clearly stated. Once your registration forms have been submitted and you have been accepted to the Program, you will be contacted by Brittney Bertrand to arrange your travel.

 

Due to the limited number of spots, sharing a room will be required. Rooms vary in size and therefore there will be two youth per room maximum. Each person will have their own individual bed.

 

Registration Procedures

Upon registering for the Program, you are responsible to respond to all emails and communications from the Program Coordinators.  Please check your schedules and calendars before submitting your registration form to ensure you are available for all Program dates and Graduation, inclusive of travel. Once travel is purchased, it cannot be cancelled or refunded or moved to another person. You will be responsible for repayment of travel costs to MNBC if you choose to cancel unless you provide a valid reason for cancellation. As we would like to offer the opportunity to as many Aboriginal youth as possible, it is important that you understand that once registered, you must attend.

Additional Information

  • Full contact information needs to be included on every form. 
  • Registrations must be completed for all attending youth.
  • Travel will be booked in the most cost-effective manner possible.  In cases where it is cheaper to fly than drive, costs for driving will not be reimbursed.
  • For participants travelling by car, only the driver will be paid the mileage reimbursement.
  • Travel costs such as bus fare or taxi fare to get to the program and back will be reimbursed after the event.
  • Participants will be financially responsible for any fees due to flight changes or cancellation.

Code of Ethics

Please remember that you are attending this Program because you are an Aboriginal Youth Leader.  The following behaviour is important not just for yourself, but also because you are a role model to your community:

ü  Show respect for all participants of the Program.

ü  Show respect for the social / cultural values of other youth from other communities.

ü  Show respect for the Program organizers (staff, volunteers, guests, presenters, service personnel, and hotel staff).

ü  Participate fully in all program activities—workshops, discussions, events, and all other activities. 

ü  Demonstrate respect by refraining from alcohol or drug use at any time on your way to the program, during the program or on your way from home from the program. There will be zero tolerance for drugs and alcohol by all attending youth participants. 

ü  Honour the safety of others and commit to a Program free from violence, weapons, harassment or threats.

ü  Remember that your personal conduct, both in and out of the program, reflects upon your community and it is your responsibility to safeguard the reputation and pride of all Aboriginal people.

ü  The program organizers reserve the right to send home any Youth who do not adhere to this code of conduct.

1.       Who are the organizations that are offering to train us in Entrepreneurship?

Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) develops and enhances opportunities for our Métis Chartered Communities and Métis people in British Columbia by providing culturally relevant social and economic programs and services. MNBC acknowledges the funding provided by the BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres under the Urban Partnerships Innovation Program Stream.

 

The Canadian Center for Aboriginal Entrepreneurship, Inc. (CCAE) is an incorporated business dedicated to Aboriginal Entrepreneurship in Canada. The CCAE has developed the Aboriginal BEST (Business and Entrepreneurship Skills Training) program, which is the only entrepreneurship training program of its kind in Canada! BEST benefits people in all stages of business development who want to turn their dreams into reality. 

 

MNBC and the CCAE have partnered to deliver a unique 2 day intensive entrepreneurship program.

2.       Who can apply to the Aboriginal Youth Entrepreneurship Program?

This Program is for Aboriginal Youth (Metis, Inuit, Status & non-Status First Nations) between the ages of 18- 35, who would like to develop or learn more about starting up their own business.

This program may be right for you if:

·         You have a good idea of a potential business;

·         You need a better understanding of how to develop a business plan;

·         You are ready to start a business but need mentorship to get up and running; or

·         You are interested in entrepreneurship but don’t know where to start.

 

3.       What will I gain from completing the Aboriginal Youth Entrepreneurship Program?

Participants will be provided with a FREE opportunity to learn about opening their own business in a unique 2 day session followed by a graduation ceremony and certificate presentation.

4.       How much will the program cost?

MNBC and CCAE are offering this program free of charge, inclusive of 1) all books and materials, 2) travel supports, 3) accommodations, and 4) meals for the duration of the program training days.

Program Training Sessions – Day 1 & 2

·         Outline of the program, expectations, timelines, handout of manuals, business plan templates

·         Introduction to business and business planning: why a business plan is important and what is included in a business plan

·         Market research: what it is, how to do it

·         Competition and competitive advantage: how to create a great competitive advantage

·         Marketing

·         Legal structure of a business

·         Laws, rules, regulations and legal Stuff, including hiring regulations

·         Insurance & tax: GST, PST, income, reporting

·         Suppliers, professional advisors

·         5 Major ways of financing a business, and what lenders look for

·         Financials: personal budget: how much do you have to pay yourself? Cost of doing business and pricing start-up costs , projected cash flow statement – Vancity and All Nations Trust to present 

·         Review of days 1 and 2 & next steps: description of graduation and presentations

Graduation Ceremony

·         Polishing individual presentations & practice

·         Introduction of panelists

·         Individual presentations to panel and fellow participants

·         Panelists decide on winners, create feedback and comments for each presenter

·         Certificates presented to all and panel announces 1st, 2nd, 3rd place. Awarding of prizes

·         Cultural Dinner & Celebration to honour participants completion

6.       What will happen after the 2 day program is over?

The Program has allocated a set amount of time in between training and graduation to support individuals in developing their business plans. CCAE staff will support individual participants in the weeks leading up to the Graduation through mentorship opportunities and additional online workshops.
