Fire Prevention Week

** Attention: Splatsin Teachers, Principals, and School Administrators **

Fire Prevention Week (FPW) runs from October 8-14, 2023, and First Nations’ Emergency Services Society (FNESS) wants to help you to support your school and community to stay fire safe! First Nations’ Emergency Services Society is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to support First Nation communities across BC to develop and sustain safer and healthier communities.

This year’s FPW theme is Cooking Safety Starts with YOU! Pay Attention to Fire Prevention. Cooking-related fires are a leading cause of home fires and injuries and sadly, our babies, children, and Elders are at greatest risk. The good news is that most cooking fires are preventable, and we can teach children how to stay safe in the kitchen.

The 2023 FPW School Program reaches all students from kindergarten through grade twelve, with lifesaving fire safety information and activities. It’s easily accessible on the FNESS Fire Prevention Week Websitehttps://www.fness.bc.ca/resource/fire-prevention-week-2023/ and includes everything teachers need for classroom delivery including an introductory letter, classroom activities, poster contest, and prizes!

Should teachers need support and/or resources, please reach out – FNESS is available to help!

Please consider requesting a Fire Safety Presentation. It’s always great to hear messages that are taught in the classroom reinforced by fire professionals. If your school would like a presentation or visit from the Fire Department or a FNESS representative, please contact FNESS at the e-mail below.

Together, through education, we can all make a big difference in the lives of many. Schools participating in Fire Prevention Week activities will be recognized with a Fire Safety Education School Certificate, presented by FNESS following Fire Prevention Week activities. Please note a new set of laminated cards will be sent to preschools/daycares from FNESS in the coming weeks.

If you have any questions or need support, please don’t hesitate to contact Alisha Juma, FNESS Fire Services Coordinator at [email protected]. And for more Fire Prevention Week information and resources, please visit www.fness.bc.ca.
