EOC Update 16


Waytk (Hello) members:

There was significant fire activity in our region yesterday fueled by heat and high winds. The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) remains on-scene at all nearby fires 24 hours a day, reassessing containment lines for breaches. Crews, equipment, and aircraft continue to defend guards and containment lines.

Our hearts are with the members of the Okanagan Indian Band (OKIB) and anyone else who has been displaced due to the wildfires. Sunday’s aggressive fire behaviour and thick smoke was a powerful reminder that we must be prepared for wildfires in our community.

IR1 Salmon River remains under an Evacuation Alert until further notice. No areas of our reserves are on an Evacuation Order. Our EOC continues to actively monitor the situation and it is not the recommendation of our EOC or the BC Wildfire Service to upgrade the alert to an order at this time.

Today, the EOC has been coordinating emergency social services, and updated maps and contacts lists for both IR #1 and IR #2. The team also attended multiple meetings with Emergency Management BC (EMBC) and the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS).

Evacuation Plans are being delivered to homes in IR #2 today as a proactive measure in the event that this area is put on an alert or an order. You can view the Evacuation Plans for both reserves here: https://splatsin.ca/emergencies.

White Rock Lake K61884

This fire has grown to 62,273 hectares in size and is approximately 22 km from Splatsin.

  • Fueled by the predicted high winds and hot temperatures, this fire increased in size along all fire perimeters.
  • Due to the significant fire activity yesterday, every division working on this fire is reassessing containment lines for breaches this morning.
  • Crews, equipment, and aerial resources will continue to defend remaining guards and containment lines. Structure protection and BC Wildfire Service crews are working 24/7 around affected communities.

Two Mile Road K42078

  • As predicted, increased winds created some fire spread to the north yesterday, however, there was limited growth overnight.
  • On the west side of the fire, crews have made excellent progress on securing the flank above the community of Sicamous. Crews continue to work on the south and north sides of the fire, wrapping around towards the east with machine guards and hand-cleared guards.
  • Structure protection equipment is installed on two cabins to the northeast.

Bunting Road K41561

  • This fire is approximately 31 km from Splatsin.
  • Grown south, located in steep terrain due to yesterday’s wind event
  • Helicopters bucketing fire with success.

Momich Lake K21658

  • This fire joined with the Michael Creek Fire, which was located just northeast of Adams Lake.
  • BCWS reports the Momich Lake wildfire is not currently advancing towards Seymour Arm.

Crazy Creek Gorge FSR K41769

  • The expected increase in winds resulted in increased fire behaviour yesterday.
  • Despite the higher winds, there were no containment lines breached last night.
  • Structural protection set up is now complete in Pete Martin Bay, Queest and structures south of the community of Queest. Structure protection was completed for 12 additional structures in Narrows Village south of Queest Village yesterday. This equipment will continue to be monitored.

Hunakwa Lake K41676

  • Crews continue to mop up and patrol for any hotspots that may impact the guard on the west and north side of the fire, near the community of Seymour Arm.
  • Sprinklers are going to be installed along the fire’s southern guard to limit spread in this area.

Three Valley Lake K41807

  • There are no crews on this 433-hectare fire, it will be monitored.
