Wildfire Home Ignition Zone Assessments Now Available

The Splatsin FireSmart Coordinator (Olivia Lemke) is now offering Home Ignition Zone (HIZ) Assessments for Splatsin Community Members.

This free program is designed to help you assess your home and landscape’s vulnerability to wildfires and ember-ignition. Splatsin’s trained FireSmart Representative will guide you through best practices for defensible space and home hardening in a 45-60 minute evaluation.

What is a HIZ Assessment?

A home ignition zone evaluation is a review of the vulnerability of your house and landscape to wildfire and ember-ignition. During this assessment, an evaluator will review defensible space and home hardening principles. By answering the questions in the assessment they will be able to recommend changes that will make the greatest difference in defending against structure ignition.

Why It Matters

It’s estimated that 90% of homes are destroyed indirectly by wind-borne embers that are carried ahead of the fire perimeter. By taking proactive steps, we can protect our homes and our community.

Let’s work together to create a safer, more resilient community. To sign-up for a HIZ Assessment, please contact your local FireSmart Coordinator at [email protected]. If you’re interested in learning more about wildfire preparedness, visit https://www.firesmartbc.ca.
